(CALGARY, AB) May 24, 2016 — The Calgary Foundation is committed to the long-term rebuilding of Fort McMurray and is making a $1.1 million contribution to the Rebuilding Fort McMurray Fund held at the Edmonton Community Foundation. This contribution comprises $100,000 from the Calgary Foundation and $1 million from a visionary anonymous donor at the Calgary Foundation. All dollars from this Fund will go to support charitable organizations in the Fort McMurray region. As a community foundation, the Calgary Foundation is in the business of building community.
Community foundations from across Alberta and Canada are pooling their resources to contribute to the Rebuilding Fort McMurray Fund. The process of rebuilding Fort McMurray will require long-term financial commitment. The Fund will focus on restoring and enhancing the social infrastructure of the Fort McMurray community, especially needs not covered by governments or insurance.
As one of 191 community foundations across Canada, the Calgary Foundation is part of a national movement of organizations committed to building and nurturing community. “One of the many benefits of the community foundation movement is the ability to partner with other Foundations in times of need,” says the Calgary Foundation’s Board Chair Ali Bhojani. “This partnership and our $1.1 million contribution to the Rebuilding Fort McMurray Fund will bolster the strength and capacity of the Fund and ensure that theFort McMurray community can rebuild over the long-term.”
The Rebuilding Fort McMurray Fund will not be an endowed Fund. The entire Fund will be disbursed for community good. Calgary Foundation President and CEO Eva Friesen says that:“Following the floods of 2013, the Calgary Foundation established the Flood Rebuilding Fund to support long-term community recovery efforts in some of the hardest hit areas of southern Alberta. The Fund wrapped-up in early 2016 after granting over $9.1 million, the entire value of the Fund, in grants into affected communities. We certainly learned the value of a Fund that can support charities who will be working to rebuild community after a disaster. We want to help make such a Fund available to the community of Fort McMurray.”
The Calgary Foundation has been nurturing a healthy, vibrant, giving and caring community since 1955. The Foundation works to build a strong and sustainable charitable sector that serves the current and emerging needs of the community for the long-term benefit of Calgary and area. In 2014-15, the Calgary Foundation saw $59.9 million in new contributions, had an asset base of $834.4 million and granted $47.3 million to over 900 charitable organizations.
