CFC celebrates 25 years and Canada’s 150th!

Canada’s community foundation movement has been working towards 2017 a long time, so it’s hard to believe we are here!

Our engagement Canada’s 150th started in 2011 with Smart & Caring Communities as our network rallied around Governor General David Johnston and his call to help build a “smarter and more caring” Canada. With establishment of new community foundations and funds we now reach into more than 85% of communities in Canada.

In 2013, our movement began reaching out to the public alongside partners CBC/Radio-Canada and VIA Rail Canada as part of the 2017 Starts Now conversation series. The three-month long cross-Canada tour to a dozen communities connected prominent Canadians with more than 1,200 local delegates representing community organizations and other important groups.

We followed all that up as one of the founding members of the 150Alliance, a national network of more than 1,500 organizations, groups and individuals working to make the most of Canada’s sesquicentennial. The 150Alliance will continue to engage Canadians throughout 2017 through a series of cross-country events and storytelling opportunities.

And last year we launched the Community Fund for Canada’s 150th, a collaborative effort between the Government of Canada, 150+ community foundations, and local leaders to grant over $19 million in support of two thousand community-based projects by the end of 2017.

This milestone year has helped unlock the collective engagement of our philanthropic network in communities and across the country that will extend well beyond Canada’s 150th.

Community Foundations of Canada turns 25!

As we mark Canada’s sesquicentennial, we’re also excited to celebrate our own anniversary. This year Community Foundations of Canada turns 25!

Since 1992, with contribution from countless community leaders, donors, Board members, partners, and volunteers, we have grown from a network of 28 community foundations to over 191 today.  We have a host of anniversary activities planned throughout the year that will tie in to everything from new programs to digital storytelling to partner activation.

Our 25th anniversary celebrations will culminate at our 2017 Community Foundations Conference taking place May 11-13 in Ottawa-Gatineau. Together we will recognize the many champions who helped establish and build our national network into the thriving movement it is today.

Canada 150 partnerships and promotions

To mark Canada’s 150th, we’ve got a number of new and exciting partnerships and promotions on the go. Here’s some of the activities already underway and others to keep a lookout for soon.

We teamed up with Facebook to launch a #Canada150 profile frame for the month of January. Our Facebook frame is now live, and is being used by thousands of Canadians including some prominent figures. To add the frame yourself, visit the Community Foundations of Canada Facebook page and click “Try It” on our pinned post. Spread the word by sharing the post with your networks!

We’re also excited to be an Official Partner of CBC/Radio-Canada throughout 2017. Together, Community Foundations of Canada and the 150Alliance will be working with Canada’s national broadcaster highlight  stories of great community champions across the country and deepen the connection between local media outlets and community foundations.

More details will be coming soon about our partnership with CBC/Radio-Canada, as well as others that are in the works for what promises to be an extraordinary year!
