Desmond Cole and Ratna Omidvar join stellar conference speaker lineupWednesday, December 7th, 2016 | Erin Kasungu
The countdown is on! We’re exactly 150 days away from the 2017 Community Foundations Conference. Lots of action on the go as we get ready to welcome participants to Ottawa-Gatineau in May. We’ve added two more inspiring speakers in Ratna Omidvar and Desmond Cole to our already fantastic lineup.
The Honourable Ratna Omidvar is an internationally recognized voice on migration, diversity and inclusion. She came to Canada from Iran in 1981 and her own experiences of displacement, integration and citizen engagement have been the foundation of her work. Ratna was appointed to the Senate of Canada in April 2016 and is currently a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Global Diversity Exchange (GDX), Ted Rogers School of Management, Ryerson University. Her long-standing career has earned her honours including the Order of Canada for her advocacy work on behalf of immigrants and devotion to reducing inequality in Canada.
As an award-winning freelance journalist, radio host and civil rights activist based in Toronto, Desmond’s work has appeared in the pages of the Toronto Star, Toronto Life, Walrus, NOW, Torontoist, Ethnic Aisle, and other publications. He was honoured three times at the 2015 National Magazine Awards, including a gold prize for Best New Magazine Writer, and is currently working on his first book about the experiences of Black Canadians.
