Ottawa, ON — Community Foundations of Canada (CFC) is proud to launch Free to Play, a new national fund helping communities unlock the power of outdoor, unstructured play.
Supported through a $16M seed contribution from Waltons Trust, Free to Play brings together funders locally and nationally to support projects that help kids get outside, take risks, and build confidence. This initial contribution will act as a springboard for further collaboration, with the fund designed to grow through national and community contributions in the years ahead to double in size. Whether through nature-based programs or play spaces, land-based play rooted in Indigenous knowledge, or community-driven efforts that encourage adventurous, outdoor play.

“Play builds more than joy—it builds confidence, connection, and belonging. We’re proud to work with Waltons Trust and our network of community foundations to make play a priority for every child in Canada.”
Andrea Dicks, President, Community Foundations of Canada
“From promoting physical activity, to mental wellness, to engagement with learning, and so much more, the research is clear that outdoor play is the best medicine. Supporting communities to unlock the power of play helps build a national movement that can make a difference to children’s lives in the ways that count the most.”
Dr. Brussoni, Professor in the Department of Pediatrics and the School of Population and Public Health at the University of British Columbia (UBC)
Led Locally, Built for Impact
Delivered in partnership with community foundations across the country, Free to Play puts local leadership at the centre. Foundations will work with local partners, review applications, and help ensure projects reflect each community’s unique needs and strengths.
Together, we’re creating a national movement, grounded in local realities and built for long-term change.
“Outdoor play is one of the simplest yet most powerful investments we can make in our children’s wellbeing. We’re proud to support local communities in fostering a culture of outdoor play—helping families unplug, enjoy the outdoors, and create spaces that reflect their unique identities. Free to Play is about giving every child the freedom to explore, grow, and thrive.”
Christy Moorhead, Executive Director, Waltons Trust

Why Now
Outdoor play in Canada is in decline. Only 39% of kids meet daily physical activity recommendations, and screen time continues to rise. These shifts are tied to reduced mental wellness, lower resilience, and fewer chances for kids to explore, grow, and connect.
CFC’s Vital Signs report on Sport and Belonging also shows a wider impact: 87% of newcomers felt more connected to their communities through their children’s sports and activities—yet nearly 4 in 10 Canadians still don’t feel a strong sense of belonging.
Free to Play is about more than play—it’s about building stronger, more connected communities.
